Nestled in the leafy suburbs of Lang’ata, just a short drive from Nairobi’s bustling city center, the Giraffe Centre is a must-visit destination for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and families looking for a fun yet educational day out. Founded in 1979 by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW), the Giraffe Centre has grown into a leading conservation facility dedicated to protecting the endangered Rothschild giraffe while offering visitors a chance to get up close and personal with these gentle giants.
A Rich History of Conservation
The story of the Giraffe Centre begins with Betty and Jock Leslie-Melville, a British-Kenyan couple who discovered that the Rothschild giraffe, a subspecies native to East Africa, was in danger of extinction. By the 1970s, fewer than 130 Rothschild giraffes were left in the wild due to habitat loss and human encroachment. To address this crisis, the couple brought two young Rothschild giraffes, Daisy and Marlon, to their estate, with the aim of breeding and increasing their numbers.

This initiative quickly grew into a larger conservation effort, leading to the establishment of the Giraffe Centre. Today, thanks to breeding and relocation programs spearheaded by the Centre, the Rothschild giraffe population has rebounded significantly, and these iconic animals now roam in several Kenyan national parks and conservancies.
Up Close with the Giraffes
One of the highlights of visiting the Giraffe Centre is the opportunity to feed the giraffes from an elevated platform. Visitors are given specially formulated pellets to offer the giraffes, which eagerly extend their long necks and distinctive purple tongues to accept the treats. This hands-on experience is both thrilling and humbling, as it allows you to appreciate the sheer size, beauty, and grace of these animals.

For the adventurous, there’s even the chance to receive a “giraffe kiss” – where a giraffe gently takes food from your lips! It’s a unique moment that many visitors rave about, making for excellent photo opportunities and unforgettable memories.
Educational and Environmental Programs
Beyond the fun of feeding the giraffes, the Centre is committed to educating the public about conservation and the importance of protecting endangered species. School groups frequently visit to learn about giraffes, their habitat, and broader environmental conservation efforts. The Centre’s knowledgeable guides provide fascinating insights into giraffe behavior, anatomy, and the crucial role these animals play in Kenya’s ecosystems.
Additionally, the Giraffe Centre runs various environmental programs, focusing on tree planting, reforestation, and sustainable farming practices, with the aim of preserving the natural habitats that giraffes and other wildlife rely on.
The Giraffe Manor Connection
Many visitors to the Giraffe Centre may also be aware of Giraffe Manor, a luxury boutique hotel located nearby. This iconic property allows guests to share their breakfast with giraffes, as the resident herd roams freely on the grounds, occasionally poking their heads through the dining room windows for a nibble of toast! While the Giraffe Manor is a separate entity, both institutions share a strong commitment to giraffe conservation, and many tourists choose to visit both.

The Perfect Day Out
For those looking to escape the city for a few hours, the Giraffe Centre provides a serene and enriching experience. After spending time with the giraffes, visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk along the Gogo River Nature Trail, which winds through the surrounding forest and offers a chance to spot birds, warthogs, and other wildlife.

The Centre also has a well-stocked gift shop where proceeds go toward supporting its conservation efforts. From giraffe-themed souvenirs to handcrafted Kenyan artwork, it’s the perfect place to pick up a memento of your visit.
Plan Your Visit
The Giraffe Centre is open year-round and welcomes visitors daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. It’s a great destination for families, tourists, and anyone interested in wildlife conservation. Whether you’re feeding a giraffe for the first time or learning about Kenya’s endangered species, a visit to the Giraffe Centre is sure to be a memorable and meaningful experience.
